Overview

Bubur Ayam Tangki 18 “A Guan” stands as a storied landmark within Jakarta’s bustling Mangga Besar culinary scene. Specializing in traditional chicken porridge, this eatery offers a simple yet profound dining experience deeply rooted in local heritage and Chinese-Indonesian flavors. Located at Jl. Mangga Besar 1 No.20 B, the venue draws a diverse crowd—from longtime locals seeking nostalgic comfort food to curious visitors eager to explore authentic tastes.

The main attraction is the bubur ayam itself: a thick, savory porridge that delivers a gentle, umami-rich profile with every spoonful. While the dish may appear modest, its true depth unfolds through subtle seasoning and quality ingredients. Signature toppings elevate the porridge—shredded kampung chicken lends a rustic texture, while additions like fried dough (cakwe) and preserved radish infuse contrasting flavors and crunch. What truly distinguishes Bubur Ayam Tangki 18 “A Guan” from other porridge spots in Jakarta are the pork-based accompaniments. The braised pork offal, known locally as sekba, and pork satay provide a bold counterpoint to the mild chicken base, showcasing a unique dimension not commonly found in conventional bubur ayam.

Additional highlights include options like duck egg, soy sauce eggs, and fried fish cakes, broadening the palate for those who crave a heartier meal. The Liang Teh and susu kacang offer refreshing, traditional drink choices that complement the savory dishes and round out the experience.

The space itself is uncomplicated and functional, reflecting its focus on substance over style. It may not cater to leisurely gatherings, but the efficient service and lively atmosphere generate a distinctly local charm. This spot thrives on its reputation and loyal patrons—some with memories stretching back decades. Early visits are recommended, as popular toppings such as pig ears and intestines often sell out quickly, underscoring the demand and authenticity of the offerings.

While views on the porridge’s seasoning vary—with some suggesting the broth could embrace a stronger infusion—the collective sentiment acknowledges Bubur Ayam Tangki 18 “A Guan” as a pillar of Jakarta’s street food culture. It caters primarily to those who appreciate hearty, comforting meals steeped in tradition, and who are open to exploring the interplay between chicken-based porridge and savory pork delicacies.

In essence, this restaurant offers more than just a bowl of porridge; it presents a taste of history and community, merging simple ingredients into a beloved culinary experience that continues to resonate across generations.

Chicken porridge at the finest. I ne of the best I’ve tried. It looks plain by plain sights, but it was packed with umami flavour! Rich umami taste spoon after spoon, and this porridge more enjoyable with extra toping you can buy separate in the side. There was option of braised (different part of ) pork, from intestines, ears, blood and lungs, Also available duck egg, pork skewer, fried fish cakes, and many more toppings you can enjoy with this bowl of porridge.

Awesome simple meal, my parents’ favorite place since their childhood! Not the nicest place to hang around but one of the places to dine at. Quite costly, but hey there’s a bit of complimentary toppings to go along the porridge which was FANTASTIC. The fried dishes were good but my dad said the it’s not as good as it was when he was young.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 stars) Bubur Ayam Tangki 18 “Aguan” is a must-visit spot for bubur lovers in Jakarta! The porridge is thick, flavorful, and rich, with that authentic Chinese-style taste. The toppings are generous, especially the shredded kampung chicken, fried dough (cakwe), and preserved radish (caipo), which add great texture and flavor. I highly recommend trying the braised pork offal (sekba) or soy sauce eggs—they take the dish to the next level! The portions are quite large, and the price is very reasonable for the quality you get. The place is simple but comfortable, and the service is fast. Just be sure to come early, as some of the most popular items tend to sell out quickly. Overall, an amazing dining experience. Definitely coming back!

This is a legendary store, I suppose. It has been there ever since my parents’ dating days, and so they have been taking me here to go back in time. However, for me personally, the chicken congee could be improved a lot. You can’t really taste the chicken broth like in other chicken congees, probably because they have too many customers so the chicken hasn’t fully absorbed the seasoning well. What makes them quite unique is the pork toppings that you can get to complement your congee—not many places offer that in Jakarta. The toppings may sell out really fast though. I came at 10AM on a Saturday and the pig ear and intestines were sold out.

It is a famous porridge place for long time...so you may have to wait in line to have seat... I do not know why it is famous of.. My personal opinion, the porridge is so so, not special, thr taste and structure of the porridge... the additional toppings are also common, not special... It is not bad at all too... but will not be place where I will continue to come back for its porridge, I will have it better in other places..

A legendary restaurant. Been their loyal customer since 1994, when my dad took me there for the first time. On pandemic days, this was one of the restaurants that I still visited, although I had to eat in the car. This place usually busy especially on weekend. Don't visit above 10 am. As a bubur lover, I definitely rank their bubur ayam in the 1st place. Don't forget to add their soy sauce and chili to complete it. The side dishes were delicious too. The MVP is their lumpia and Siomay. People usually also order their sekba. Although they only use some electric fans, the place usually clean. You'll never find any flies there, although they have so many chicken bones.
